TRAINING

Building Security Services considers their Security Officers the foundation of our company. In order to ensure consistent, quality performance, BSS feels training is the key. For this reason, intense concentration is focused on training. The instructional staff is comprised of highly trained individuals with collective experience in all aspects of security.

The training program enables our employees to become thoroughly familiar with all aspects of the material contained in the BSS Conditions of Employment for Security Officers. A schedule of ongoing training is provided annually by Building Security Services for officers on a variety of subjects.

Initial training for all security officers consists of a ten-part series of videotaped programs. Course materials include instructor guides, videos and test materials. The entire series is designed to be administered in eight hours, including lectures and testing. A listing of the training modules utilized is outlined below. Building Security Services uses the PSTN series of tapes in its training efforts. The use of training modules ensures a continuity of information in that every officer will receive the exact same training.

Introduction to Security and the Role of the Security Officer

This program reviews the scope, complexity, and importance of the security officer's responsibilities. The qualities of a good officer. Operational procedures, use of report forms, methods of communication and ways to deal with a variety of emergency situations. Information about the conditions which create workplace crime and the security functions to prevent crime as well as the proper roles of security officers.

Human & Public Relation

Provides officers with an understanding of public relations and specify processes for effective interpersonal skills. It is important that security officers understand they are representatives of an organization and in that capacity have the responsibility to reinforce a positive image. The importance of a smile, efficiency, courtesy and creating a positive rapport are studied.

Communication

Provides security officers with a basic understanding of the process and significance of communications and recognizes the importance of telephone etiquette and ways to improve listening skills.

Patrol

The purposes, techniques and types of patrols are taught. Development of keen observation and accurate follow-up are outlined as well as the importance of utilizing the individuals senses, while on duty are stressed.

General Duties, Operational Procedures

Review the basic understanding of the general duties and responsibilities of the private security officer. Information and techniques to prevent, detect and investigate losses by means of patrol-consistent systems of enforcement and parcel inspection are discussed.

Fire Prevention

Essential information is presented on how a fire starts, stages it passes through and how it can be extinguished. The program stresses cooperation with the fire department and medical personnel in an emergency situation.

Emergency Situations

This program reviews the importance of keeping calm during emergencies and knowing who to call and how to assist at the scene until specialists arrive. It includes procedures for bombs and bomb threats, crowd control procedures and general guidelines for emergency evacuation.

Safety

The moral, legal and economic responsibility to maintain safety standards is covered in this vital program. It explains and reviews the importance of observation and reporting skills necessary to prevent accidents.

Report Writing

A basic understanding for writing accurate and complete reports is covered. This module stresses that careful observation and accurate detailed note taking is a critical factor in preparing good reports.

Sleep, Nutrition and Shift Work

This module reviews the relationship between sleep, good nutrition and how it relates to job performance.
