You’re here in the Bronx, but you’re unsure where to start. There’s so much to do and so little time!
Never fear; we’ve got a guide here. Read on to see the top things to do in the Bronx.
The Bronx Zoo
Why You Have To See It:
The Bronx Zoo is America’s largest urban zoo. With more than 10,000 animals divided into 650 species, they have something for everyone.
Highlights:
- Congo Gorilla Forest: See the Western lowland gorilla, mandrill, or okapi up close and personal.
- Wild Asia Monorail: Operating on a seasonal basis (check their website for specifics), the monorail offers a great way to see the rolling habitats of tigers, pandas, elephants, and endangered species.
- Treetop Adventure: An aerial ropes course for the kids and parents, this adventure is a great way to engage in some monkey business with your family.
Make Sure You:
Bring good walking shoes and a stroller for the kiddos (and your spouse, too, if need be). The zoo is 265 acres and is an all-day event.
The Bronx Museum
Why You Have To See It:
This contemporary art museum focuses on the melting pot that is the borough, with a unique lens on political and social themes in the community. This is a great way to get a feel for the heart of the community, with more than 2,000 artworks by artists of Latin American, Asian, and African backgrounds.
Highlights:
- Cool Location: The City of New York was graciously donated a synagogue to use as a museum.
- Free Admission: Vacations are expensive, and the Bronx museum makes that a little easier by having free admission.
- Always Something Going On: The museum always has new events and attractions.
Make Sure You:
Check the website to see what fun new things might be happening when you go, to make sure you pick the right day.
New York Botanical Garden
Why You Have To See It:
A beautiful serene walk with a plethora of things to look at, the Botanical Gardens are known worldwide for their array of plant life.
Highlights:
- Orchid Show: From February to April, see the incredible themed floral display. Deemed better than any other flower show in New York, the orchid show is a blossoming event like no other.
- Thain Family Forest: The most significant remaining thicket of the city’s original woodland, this 50-acre plot is an old-growth forest with trees that pre-date the American Revolution by centuries.
- Enid A. Haupt Conservatory: A tropical paradise like stepping into a whole new world.
- The LuEsther T. Mertz Library: Known for having a jaw-dropping collection of books on botany (the largest anywhere), those with a green thumb might just spend their whole day inside.
Make Sure You:
Check and see what might be coming up in the garden. Because of the stunning space, it’s frequently the setting for events.
Bronx Night Market
Why You Have To See It:
More than 100 food vendors get together in Fordham Plaza for a live music party with the tastes of New York.
Highlights:
- Free Admission: Pay for your food, stay for the music.
Make Sure You:
Plan to be there on a Saturday from May through October. Since it’s an open-air market, these are the only days it runs.
