FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

U.S. Interest in “Physical Security” Nearly Quadruples Since 2020, Google Trends Shows

Search interest is ~285% higher vs. August 2020 and hit a new high in June 2025; recurring winter spikes align with budgeting cycles and holiday risk.

August 6, 2025 — Building Security Services today released an analysis of U.S. Google Trends data showing unprecedented interest in physical security. Search activity reached a new high in June 2025 (index = 100) and is now ~285% higher than August 2020 levels (index = 26). While December–February consistently see above-trend interest (notably December 2023: 68 and February 2025: 87), the June 2025 peak indicates elevated, year-round demand.

weekly search interest chart for 'physical security'

Key findings (U.S., Web Search, weekly index)

  • New high: June 2025 = 100 (peak for Aug 2020–Aug 2025).

  • Growth vs. baseline: ~+285% vs. Aug 2020 = 26 (nearly 4× higher).

  • Seasonality: Persistent winter lift with standouts in Dec 2023 (68) and Feb 2025 (87); however, June 2025 is the overall peak.

  • Geography: Broad-based growth across U.S. regions, with the strongest concentration from states containing major metropolitan areas.

Amanda DeAlmeida, Executive Vice President, Building Security, Building Security Services, said:
“We’re seeing a structural shift in how organizations think about their facilities. The near-quadrupling of search interest reflects practical pressures—insurance and compliance expectations, higher asset values, and the realities of hybrid occupancy.”

“Winter spikes make sense: year-end reviews, new budgets, and the holiday retail season all concentrate attention on gaps—after-hours coverage, visitor controls, and alarm response. But the new peak in June 2025 suggests this isn’t just seasonal; it’s sustained. In practice, buyers are prioritizing quick wins: consolidating credentials (mobile + badge), modernizing access control to the cloud, adding AI-assisted video analytics, and running tabletop exercises to tighten incident response.”

Time Period Search Interest Increase vs. Aug 2020
